Origin of Vastu
It is believed that the origin of Vastu has taken place a thousand of years before. And, it may be that the people of those times may not have lived themselves in houses but they definitely created something called "Vastu Shastra" for the upcoming generations. This science deals in helping people with taking care of the direction of the place they live or work in so as to take most advantage out of it.
In those times the principles on which this science was based was that of the Rays from the Sun at different times of the day. And, this the people of those times concluded only after meticulous observations. Pre analysis was done before stating the fact.
The Story of origin of Vastu
The origin of Vastu has often been connected to Vedas which according to the scriptures and studies are around five thousand years old. And, it has been established that various Yogis and saints with their continuous meditation and penance found the root of Vastu. The direct cosmic teachings made them to understand the intricacies of this special science of Vastu. And, so Vastu is considered as a form of divine knowledge revealed to the Yogis directly by the God. And, scriptures reveal that the origin of Vastu is related to Stapatya Veda which is a part of the Atharva Veda.
In those times the subject was believed to be a technical one and was generally taught through the architects (Sthapatis). And, this ended for years with their heirs taking up the responsibility. Most of the principles related to construction, sculpture and architecture are there in the science of Vastu. The description of Vastu can be found in Agni Purana, Mataysya Purana, Vishnu Purana, Skanda Purana and Garuda Purana.
There are also other ancient Shastras that teach about Vastu Shastra which include Samraangan Sutradhar, Kashyap Shilpshastra, Praman Manjaree, Vishvakarma Prakash and Vrihad Sanhita
How Mahabharata explains about Vastu Shstra?
As per Mahabharata, when the Rajasuya Yagna conducted by King Yuddhistira was being organized, a number of houses were built for all those kings ho have been invited to Indraprastha city. These houses were built so high as to look like mountains and definitely they stood tall with the majestic beauty. There were no obstructions in those houses, the compounds were surrounded with high standing walls, the doors stood all with uniform height and everything was decorated with many beautiful ornaments. It is believed that the pattern in which the city of Ayodhya dwelling place of Rama was built in the similar manner as that showed in the great architectural text of Manasara.
Many of the building built during the commencement of Buddhism have been based on Vastu and its evidence has been found in the Buddhist literature. Also, there we can find references to particular buildings. It is believed that Lord Buddha gave his discourse on the architecture and had pointed out the supervision of the buildings as one of important duties. There are mention of the monasteries and building which were built in the design such that they were partly religious and partly residential.
Vastu with its literal meaning as "Dwelling" is according to the Vedas and other teaching is the residing place of God and humans. The essence lies in the fact that, it covers all covers all types of building including offices, personal homes, hotels, business structures, manufacturing unite, industries and others. Vastu is the amalgamation of the effects of five elements of nature and that includes Earth, Space, Fire, Water and Ait.
